About the Executive Director

Ruthanne Madway is the founder of East of Broad Improvement Association (EBA)
and serves as its Executive Director. EBA grew out of two earlier civic
improvement efforts that Madway also founded as a resident concerned about
the future of the East of Broad community: WashWest Neighbors and the 13th Street
Improvement Project.
Madway is an architectural historian whose interest in community
improvement grew out of her academic training. She holds a B.A. in economics
from Wellesley College,
studied art history at the University
of Pennsylvania and did graduate
work in art history at Harvard
University. Her field
is modern architecture with a concentration in late 19th- and early
20th-century American architecture and city planning.
Madway worked as a research associate for Sun Oil Company and Wharton
Econometric Forecasting Associates. As part of her graduate studies, she
taught art history at Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania.
She was born in Philadelphia, grew up in
Wynnewood and graduated from Lower
Merion High
School. She has lived in Center City for over
twenty years, most of that time in Washington Square West.
